Hypertension: Term and Diagnosis
Hypertension is a condition where blood pressure rises above normal in a long run. Hypertension is a disorder that difficult to know by our self. The only way to know hypertension is to measure our bloodpressure regularly.
Given 9 of 10 people who suffer from hypertension could not identify the cause of the disease. That is why hypertension is called silent killer. Someone realized that he or she suffers from hypertension as complications had occurred. So hypertension would be just realized when there were malfunctioning organs such as coronary heart disease, kidney function disorder, cognitive dysfunction or stroke. Hypertension will reduce the life expectancy of sufferers.
Hypertension, in addition to resulting high case fatality rate also resulting in expensive treatments for patients. Hypertension also furthemore affects the quality of life decline.
Hypertension can be derived from parent to child. So the tendency of suffering from hypertension are greater fo those who have parent with hypertension than those who their parents do not suffer from hypertension .
Diagnosis
In general, hypertension comes when the systolic/dyastlic blood pressure exceeds 140/90 mmHg (normal 120/80 mm Hg). Systolic blood pressure is when the heart pumps blood into the arteries (when the heart is contracting). Diastolic blood pressure is when the heart expands and suck the blood back (empty deflated arteries).
Actually, the line between normal blood pressure and high blood pressure is not clear, so the classification of hypertension was based on high levels of blood pressure that resulted in an increased risk of heart disease and blood vessels.
According to WHO, in the last guidelines in 1999, limits the blood pressure considered normal is less than 130/85 mmHg, whereas if more than 140/90 mmHg is expressed as hypertension; and among these values is called high-normal. (these limits are for above 18 years)
